Our History

From Tragedy to Transformation

2010–2015: Building Foundations

2010: Registered as a community-based organization (CBO) in Kampala, focusing on stigma reduction and basic education.

2015: Transitioned to a national NGO, expanding reach to 13 districts with programs in education, livelihoods, and child protection.

2009: A Catalyst for Change
Somero Uganda was born from a heart-wrenching moment in Kawempe’s slums: the suicide of a 17-year-old girl driven to despair by stigma and exploitation. Her story ignited a grassroots movement to create safe spaces for sexually exploited girls and young women, offering hope, education, and dignity.
Impact Through the Years

1,447+ Scholarships: Enabling vulnerable children and young women to access education.

6,602 Youth Served: Via mobile health clinics providing sexual/reproductive care and HIV support.

500+ Jobs Created: Through vocational training in tailoring, ICT, and hairdressing.

Today & Tomorrow
Operating in 13 districts, we continue to innovate while staying rooted in community-led solutions. Our vision remains unwavering: a Uganda where no child or young woman is trapped by exploitation. Join us as we write the next chapter. Explore Our Work | Support Our Mission

“The Nyumba Kumi group kept our children learning during lockdown. They became family.”

Empowering Vulnerable Children and Young Women

Who We Serve:

Somero Uganda empowers children (0–17) at risk of exploitation—including child labor, trafficking, early marriage, and abuse—through education, health services, safe shelters, and child-led advocacy. We strengthen systems to protect their rights and ensure safe, nurturing environments for growth.
We also support adolescent girls, young women, and male counterparts (15–25) facing marginalization, gender-based violence, or economic hardship. Through livelihood training, SRHR education, mentorship, and safe spaces, we foster resilience, independence, and community leadership.

Our

Guiding Principles

Community-Centered solutions lie at the heart of our work. We collaborate closely with families, local leaders, and neighborhoods to design interventions that respect cultural values and address context-specific challenges. For example, our Nyumba Kumi model mobilizes clusters of 10 households to protect children’s education during crises, while the REAL Fathers program engages young dads and community mentors to reshape parenting norms. By embedding local wisdom into our strategies, we ensure programs are not just effective but owned by the communities they serve.

Equally vital is Amplifying Voices. We empower children and youth to lead advocacy through platforms like SCREAM (Supporting Children’s Rights through Education, Art, and Media) and child rights clubs, where they identify harmful practices and lobby policymakers. Meanwhile, Innovation drives our response to emerging challenges. From SafeBangle bracelets—wearable tech enabling real-time reporting of gender-based violence—to digitalizing traditional skills like tailoring, we blend grassroots ingenuity with cutting-edge tools. These principles work in tandem: community trust fuels participation, youth voices shape priorities, and innovation scales impact, creating a ripple effect of empowerment across Uganda.
