Empowering Adolescent Girls to Lead, Learn, and Thrive
In the bustling neighborhoods of Kampala, adolescent girls often face intersecting challenges—limited access to education, societal pressure to marry early, and vulnerability to exploitation. The Kampala Girls Cluster Initiative, launched in 2023, is rewriting this narrative by equipping girls with the tools to advocate for their rights, health, and futures.
What is the Kampala Girls Cluster Initiative?
A collaborative effort led by Somero Uganda, Agaliawamu, and Forever Redeemer Foundation, this 18-month project (2023–September 2024) is funded by the Child Rights Prevention Fund (CRVP). Operating in Nakawa Division’s Kinawataka, Mutungo, and Banda parishes, the initiative empowers girls aged 12–18 to make informed decisions about their social, economic, and health lives.

Core Goals:
- Build resilience and agency among adolescent girls.
- Address systemic barriers to education and health access.
- Create safe spaces for girls to lead advocacy efforts in their communities.
How It Works
The initiative combines peer-led workshops, mentorship, and community collaboration:
- Peer-Led Workshops:
Trained adolescent facilitators host weekly sessions on topics like sexual health, financial literacy, and gender rights. Girls learn to articulate their needs and challenge harmful norms. - Mentorship Circles:
Local women leaders—teachers, nurses, entrepreneurs—provide one-on-one guidance, helping girls navigate career aspirations and personal challenges. - Community Advocacy:
Girls lead campaigns to address issues like school dropout rates and child marriage, engaging parents, local leaders, and policymakers in dialogues. - Health & Safety Networks:
Partnerships with clinics and NGOs ensure girls access sexual health services, menstrual hygiene products, and violence reporting mechanisms.
Impact: Voices of Change
Nakato’s Story:
At 15, Nakato dropped out of school after her parents pressured her to marry. Through the initiative, she joined a mentorship circle, resumed her education via a scholarship, and now leads workshops on child marriage prevention. “I teach others that girls deserve choices,” she says.
By the Numbers:
- 300+ Girls Reached: Equipped with life skills and health education.
- 85% School Retention: Participants who stayed in school or resumed education.
- 20 Community Dialogues: Led by girls, influencing local policies on child protection.

Why Focus on Adolescent Girls?
Adolescent girls in Uganda face disproportionate risks:
- 1 in 4 girls aged 15–19 are mothers or pregnant (UBOS 2022).
- 48% of girls drop out before secondary school, often due to early marriage or poverty.
The initiative tackles these challenges by centering girls’ voices and fostering systemic support.
The Road Ahead
By 2024, the project aims to:
- Expand to 5 new parishes in Kampala.
- Train 50 girls as certified peer educators.
- Launch a digital platform for girls to share experiences and resources.
