How Mentorship and Community Are Transforming Young Fathers into Role Models
In Uganda, where traditional gender roles often dictate parenting norms, young fathers face immense pressure to provide financially while struggling to navigate emotional caregiving. For many, this leads to cycles of violence, absenteeism, and fractured families. Enter the REAL Fathers Program—a groundbreaking 5-year initiative reshaping parenthood by empowering young men to embrace responsibility, empathy, and active caregiving.
What is the REAL Fathers Program?
Launched in 2023 with support from the LEGO Foundation, the Responsible, Engaged, and Loving (REAL) Fathers Program targets young fathers aged 18–25 in Eastern and Central Uganda. Operating in districts like Kamuli, Mayuge, Luweero, and Kayunga, the program focuses on men with children aged 0–3, a critical window for child development and family bonding.
Core Goals:
- Reduce intimate partner violence and violence against children.
- Promote gender-equitable parenting and shared household responsibilities.
- Strengthen father-child bonds through play-based learning and early childhood development (ECD).

How It Works
The program combines mentorship, workshops, and community-driven advocacy:
- Mentorship Circles:
Experienced fathers and community leaders guide participants through monthly sessions, addressing challenges like conflict resolution, financial planning, and emotional support. - Play-Based Learning Workshops:
Fathers learn to engage in early childhood development through interactive play, storytelling, and activities that foster cognitive and emotional growth in children. - Community Dialogues:
Local leaders, mothers, and elders participate in discussions to challenge harmful gender norms and celebrate positive fatherhood models. - Partner Support:
Mothers receive parallel training to strengthen family communication and align parenting approaches.
Impact: Stories of Transformation
James’s Journey:
James, a 22-year-old motorcycle taxi rider from Luweero, once believed his role was limited to providing money. Through REAL Fathers, he learned to bathe his daughter, read bedtime stories, and resolve conflicts with his partner peacefully. “Now my child runs to greet me—not out of fear, but love,” he shares.
By the Numbers:
- 2,476 Mentors Trained: Equipped to guide young fathers in 35 sub-counties.
- 13,352 Young Couples Reached: Reporting reduced household violence and improved child well-being.
- 89% of Participants: Now engage daily in caregiving, up from 23% pre-program.
Why Focus on Fathers?

Research shows that involved fathers contribute to:
Stronger Communities: Fathers become advocates against harmful practices like child marriage.
Healthier Child Development: Improved cognitive, social, and emotional outcomes.
Reduced Gender-Based Violence: Equitable relationships model respect for future generations.
The Road Ahead
By 2027, the program aims to:
Launch a national “Fatherhood Champions” campaign to shift cultural narratives.
Expand to 10 new districts.
Integrate ECD training into local government policies.
